| The EU Project |
Libraries are large and complex organisations which handle an enormous amount of multimedia items (books, maps, CDs, DVDs, VHS….).
The tasks related to an effective management, protection of the inventory and communication with users, are a real heavy job which is inevitably affected by errors. Current systems, mainly based on barcode label reading unit are unable to avoid such problems.
LIBER-IMMS Project, taking advantage from the fully interoperability of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) applications with traditional data repository system and automatic messaging systems (internet and sms mobile communication), will provide a fully integrated set of services:
- Library Services Pack based on RFID technology will provide a better and error free internal tracing of items, supporting librarians in their daily activity, and saving costs in handling and inventory.
- Citizens Services Pack still based on RFID interoperability with library IT information system, allow lending items to citizens in a more easy and fast way (self-service).
- Messaging Services Pack to citizens will facilitate traditional booking/lending/returning activities providing just in time information on availability or freedom of access.
The Market Validation Phase will be managed at European level in Italy, Spain and Romania, and trials will be locally adapted to the state of the art of each library, but preserving the same three steps approach, enabling a coherent validation of services and allowing the required evolution of library internal organisation:
- Improvement of effectiveness of public sector organisations: the use of RFID solutions automates routines activities in items management in libraries.
- Increase of efficiency and privacy in accessing public services : self-services workstations gives freedom to users to complete the lending-returning process without any tierce intervention.
- Generation of interactive communication: data collected in real time by RFID workstations, match with customer demand for just in time messaging services via internet or mobile phone.
Protection of cultural heritage open to public: tagged items with RFID suitable 13.56 Mhz technology transponders offer a secure antitheft solution that can be switched on-off by registered users themselves.
